Don't you just hate it when you make a big decision to buy something, and then when you look into it you find way too many choices, and worse yet some of the choices involve brands or model types you never even heard about? This often happens with exercise equipment, you decide to buy an exercise bike and lo and behold you find out there are three or four different kinds of bikes. This article will explore some of the differences between a Schwinn recumbent bike and upright bikes.
First of all, there is not magical piece of exercise equipment. Any piece of equipment is only as good as the person using it. Without a commitment of using it three to five times a week, and using it long and hard enough to get the cardio going for at least twenty minutes, no piece of equipment is better than another and all will end up taking up space in a garage somewhere.
Schwinn has been in the bike business for over a hundred years, so they know their bikes. Currently you can find racing or mountain bikes, everyday road bikes, exercise bikes and even motor scooters. Their exercise bikes are like most with some upright, and some recumbent style. The upright exercise bike works pretty much like an outdoor bike, you sit upon a regular bike seat, hold the handles and pedal away. A recumbent bike has you sitting in a reclining position giving you solid back support. Both types of bikes will have an LCD Monitor that keep track of heart rate, time, distance, and difficulty/resistance programming. When choosing, you need to look no further than two of the features.
The bicycle seat is one big area where these two differ. The upright bike seat is pretty much like any old bike seat. That means those areas on your body that get sore from sitting, will still get sore from rubbing in all the wrong places. The Schwinn recumbent bikes have larger more comfortable seats that are designed to eliminate those pressure points. You can even end up working the gluteals a bit.
Another feature that is noticeably different are the handle bars. On an upright bike you are sitting bent over, hand grasping the handle bars. The harder you pedal and as the workout levels rise, you press harder, using your shoulders and arms to help you. A recumbent bike does not even have handlebars. There are two grasp bars on either side of the seat to hold onto, for heart rate Monitoring, while pedaling. The over all design is to allow the energy to be evenly spread out over the whole body and still get a great aerobic workout.
The ergonomic design of the Schwinn recumbent bike allows people to get the most production with the least fatigue, but you are in a reclined position and the bike takes up a bit more space. The upright bikes are more compact, but your shoulders, arms and buttocks can get sore. Before making a decision it would be wise to go to a store that sells them and try them both out. It will give you a better ides of the comfort level.
